Meandering Through Cuzco, Peru

Meandering Through Cuzco, Peru

Not long ago, my husband and I did some sightseeing in Cuzco after we had hiked to Machu Picchu.  If you have not heard of Cuzco, it is an ancient city with lots of history in Peru.  When you fly into the Cuzco airport, be prepared for high elevations right as you land!  The city is over 11,000 feet above sea level! A lot of people land and immediately start having altitude sickness.  Ugh!  Special note: You might want to take altitude medication before arriving. (Talk to your doctor.)

Andy and I had two days to check out Cuzco.  First touristy stop for us was a chocolate company that teaches you how to make chocolate.  That was fun, tasty and educational!

The ancient architecture in Cuzco is unbelievable.  The first cathedral was build there in 1539!  Coming from a country that is so young, which has a build it, tear it down attitude, ancient cities intrigue me.  The town of Cuzco is over 3,000 years old!  Unbelievable is all I can say!

One of the many archways in Cuzco.

Be prepared for stairs if you choose to walk the city.

While in the city of Cuzco, you must check out San Pedro Market! I have been to lots of fresh air markets in many different countries, but this was probably the largest one I have seen.  It ranged from raw meat to flowers to cheeses to alpaca sweaters.

A long aisle of cheese!

Rows of beautiful flowers!

Pig heads?

Many varieties of corn!

Hopefully, if you head to Cuzco, you will have more than two days!  It is such a big city, with lots of interesting history to learn and many things to see and do.  If you are like us, this wonderful city will just be a stepping stone to Machu Picchu!  Coming soon a blog post about our journey to Machu Picchu.
